Thodupuzha, one of the fastest growing tourist towns in Idukki district of Kerala, is blessed with scenic views, lovely lakes, forests, waterfalls and several breathtaking sites. In the native tongue Malayalam, Thodupuzha means ‘The town touching the river.’ Over the years it has grown to become the perfect location for nature lovers and movie makers due to its picturesque locations.

  • Uravappara

Uravappara is a small hillock located in Olamattom near Thodupuzha. The scenic views of this place have grabbed the hearts of tourists from different places. The main attraction of this hillock is the ‘Sree Subramanya Swami Temple’ situated at a height of 500 ft above sea level. Lord Muruga, the main deity, presides here in the form of “Bala Subramanya”, making it a desirable destination for religious travellers. The annual festival of the temple is hosted in the Malayalam month of ‘Makaram’ (January/February). Salt and pepper are the two important offerings to the deity.

This place also has mythological relevance. The legend has it that Pandavas, the renowned heroes in the great Indian epic Mahabharata, had a sojourn here during their exile. Three big boulders can be seen atop the rocks, which are believed to be used by them for cooking.

  • Thommankuthu Waterfalls

Less than 20 km from Thodupuzha city is Thommankuthu; a beautiful destination home to series of waterfalls, several caves and stunning viewpoints. It’s a perfect spot for trekkers as it consists of a 12 km pathway from the bottom of the hill to the alluring green woods. The beautiful waterfalls, green meadows and the stunning views keep the trekkers thrilled and wanting for more. Also, don’t miss out on the boating and fishing options in the nearby lake.

This enchanted waterfall is located nearby the Thommankuthu waterfalls.

  • Nedummala caves

Nedummala caves are located in Piralimattom, which is approximately 10 km far from Thodupuzha. This prehistoric site has manmade granite caves dating back to the Neolithic period.

At Piralimattom, we can see a large number of concave cupules that are nothing but manmade indents on rock surfaces and shallow grinding surface. A large number of history enthusiasts and tourists visit this site to observe and learn about the fascinating dwellings of our ancestors.

  • Ilaveezhapoonchira

Ilaveezhapoonchira is an unusual little hill station located amidst the three hillocks of Mankunnu, Thonippara and Kudayathoormala. Spread over acres of barren land where no trees grow, the place is ideally named to mean ‘where no leaves fall’.

Monsoon is the best season to visit this splendid valley as it fills up with water to form a dazzling fresh water lake.
